LEARN ABOUT OCRACOKE HISTORY
Visit the Ocracoke Preservation Society’s Museum for a glimpse into life on Ocracoke in earlier times. OPS is a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving the island’s history and cultural heritage. The OPS Museum is located in the historic home of Coast Guard Captain David Williams.
Stroll thru rooms that represent home life on Ocracoke. View documents, photos and artifacts. Stop to view a video documenting the Ocracoke brogue. Each year, the museum features rotating exhibits.
The second floor of the David Williams house has a small research library that can be used by appointment.
The museum Gift Shop funds museum projects and exhibits. You will find items relating to Ocracoke’s cultural and natural history. The shop also sells locally made items, offers a section just for children and so much more.
Outdoor exhibits include the fishing boat, Blanche, circa 1934.
During the summer, OPS hosts free porch talks and museum tours.
Children will love the mid-week Create-a-Craft program. At the end of the program, each child will leave with a handmade island souvenir.
The museum is open from early spring through early December.
