OCRACOKE VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPARTMENT CELEBRATES 50 YEARS OF SERVICE

Celebrating 50 years of service to the community.  The official OVFD celebration takes place today at an Open House from 2 to 4 PM.  Join the volunteers and the entire Ocracoke community for a celebration at 822 Irvin Garrish Highway, commonly known as “the new Fire House”.

Completed in 2014 on land generously donated by the Hutcherson family, the new building allowed for housing of a much needed ladder truck.

All of the firefighters on Ocracoke are volunteers.  This dedicated group is vital to the community.  The closest community fire department available to assist in calls is 1.5 hours away.  A trip which includes travel via the Hatteras Ferry.

A major fundraiser for the fire department is the Ocracoke Volunteer Firemen’s Ball.  In its 11th year, the firefighters and volunteers hold this event on the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend.  The event features a pig pickin, auction, live music and dancing.

Since 2006, the Ocracoke Volunteer Fire Department has received matching grants from the Office of State Fire Marshal.  The department has been fortunate in also receiving funds from the Ocracoke Occupancy Tax Board.

We encourage you to support the Ocracoke Volunteer First Department.  Attend the Firemen’s Ball, buy a T-Shirt or make a donation.
